It’s hard to believe it, but we are now less than a year away from coming together at the SEC in Glasgow for Glasgow 2024, A Worldcon for Our Futures. To celebrate this occasion, our Chair and other staff members gathered in Glasgow on Tuesday, 8 August, to announce some special events you will get to experience during the 82nd Worldcon. Glasgow 2024 Chair ‘One Year Out’ Update
Our Chair, Professor Esther MacCallum-Stewart, kicked off the celebrations with a livestream on Facebook where she announced that one of our Guests of Honour, Ken MacLeod, and Composer Gary Lloyd have created a bespoke opera that will premiere at Glasgow 2024 called Moreau’s Isle:
“One year out is a big moment for us, as you might expect! I’m absolutely delighted to announce the opera, written by Guest of Honour Ken MacLeod and Composer Gary Lloyd. This is an exciting new piece of work and something rather special. I can’t wait!”
Interview between Guest of Honour Ken MacLeod and Promotions Co-DH Meg MacDonald
Promotions Co-DH Meg MacDonald interviewed Guest of Honour Ken MacLeod to discuss his inspirations for creating Moreau’s Isle, a bespoke opera inspired by the classic H. G. Wells novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, for Glasgow 2024. In the interview, they discuss the island off the east coast of Scotland that inspired Ken to write the opera as well as his experience of writing an opera for the first time.

Composer Gary Lloyd chats about how he started writing science-fiction themed operas, why opera inspires him, and his hopes for Moreau’s Isle’s debut at Glasgow 2024.
